Kent Travel Saver - 13 June 2019
Thank you for your e-mail. As you may be aware the bus pass is administered by Kent County Council (KCC), who determine the price. It has been renamed the Kent Travel Saver instead of the Young Persons Travel Pass.
Though expensive, the new price still includes a significant discount on the cost of the fare, and for every pass that is brought, KCC subsidise the rest. However, the price is getting higher each year and the subsidy that KCC contributes is reducing.
I fully appreciate that this will cause a strain on your finances and have made this point repeatedly to KCC. They need to assess what the right balance is between contributions from parents, and the level of subsidy which they are willing to contribute. This is a matter which your County Councillor, XXX, considers every year when they set the price and I would encourage you to make your thoughts known to them.
I am sorry that I cannot intervene directly in this, as it is a matter for KCC, but your County Councillors are elected every four years to take decisions such as this and I would encourage you to get in touch with them too.
If you are still able purchase a bus pass, then I would recommend you do it as quickly as possible. Bus operators have to decide their routes for September at the end of June so the earlier applications are made, the more accurate they can plan their routes. As I said this does have an impact on finances but there is now the option of paying in instalments across the year which, I hope, might make it easier to find the money.
