KM Column - A228 Closure - 8 August 2019

The traffic on Kings Hill over the past few weeks has been nothing short of a nightmare. People have told me it’s taken them hours to do a journey that should have been 10 minutes, and some are having to leave work early in a desperate attempt to avoid the over-congested roads. Sadly, anyone trying to get between Mereworth and the M20 will struggle. That’s a huge area and a vital one not just for people trying to get to work or school but for lorries trying to get down to Dover too. Of course, I understand that the gas works need to take place, but the problems that they have caused is unacceptable.

What is more frustrating is that I warned of the impact of upcoming roadworks in the past and nothing was done. Liberty’s decision to close Kings Hill Avenue is only adding to the problems and making it even more difficult, especially when trying to get on or off Kings Hill.

We are only two weeks in and the works have another two weeks to go. This chaos cannot continue. I’ve asked both Kent County Council and Liberty to look again at what they are doing to ensure that a solution is found which would reduce the traffic impact here while the A228 is shut. This should involve better signage preventing drivers heading to the area where the road is closed, and more certainty about access on Kings Hill Avenue. You can see copies of my letters on my website, by visiting www.tomtugendhat.org. I hope that this will be resolved as soon as possible and will share any further responses I receive on my website.
